FAMILY BRAMIDAE

POMFRETS

Pomfrets are oceanic fishes that have deep compressed bodies which are high at the front; slender tail base; large eyes; large, oblique mouths with the rear of the top jaw exposed; a single dorsal fin, dorsal and anal fins that have long bases and II-III spines; long pointed pectoral fins; strongly concave tail fins; and large scales that cover the body and head and extend onto the median fins.

This circumglobal family has 6 genera with 18 species; there are three genera with four species in the eastern Pacific; three of which sometimes occur in inshore water.
