(Greek, mantis = seer, prophet)

Common Name: praying mantids, preying mantids
Distribution: Cosmopolitan, predominantly tropical, subtropical

Description
This is a small order familiar to almost everyone, and easily recognized by the long pronotum, large eyes, and grasping forelegs. The most common mantid in much of North America is the European Mantid illustrated here.
