Order - PHTHIRAPTERA
(Greek, phthir = lice; aptera = wingless)
Common Name: lice
Distribution: Cosmopolitan
Suborders: Amblycera, Ischnocera, Anoplura and Rhynchopthirina

Description
Lice are small, flattened ectoparasites infrequently encountered by the general naturalist. They were formerly divided into two orders, the chewing lice (like the feather lice shown below) and the sucking lice (like human head and body lice).
